Recognizing and Solving Irrigation Problems in Strawberry Fields with Grofit

Irrigation management is crucial for optimizing crop yields, especially in sensitive crops like strawberries. In a recent case analysis, we identified and rectified an irrigation issue in a soilless cultivation setup using the Grofit app.

#### The Problem

The analysis began with the field's tensiometer graph, one of the key features in the Grofit app. This graph, alongside other parameter graphs in the capsules, clearly indicated that the field was not getting enough water. The tensiometer values were running high, signaling increased soil tension, a clear sign that the plants were experiencing water stress.

#### Identifying the Issue with Grofit

By closely monitoring the tensiometer graph, the Grofit app helped us see that the irrigation schedule needed adjustment. Initially, the grower was irrigating the field four times a day, but the data suggested this was insufficient.

#### Additional Parameters

The Grofit capsule also includes other critical parameters that can explain why the plants demand more water. For instance, the Evapotranspiration (ETo) calculation, which considers factors like temperature, radiation, and humidity, provided insights into the increased water requirements. Higher temperatures and radiation levels, coupled with lower humidity, can significantly raise the ETo, indicating a higher need for irrigation.

#### The Solution

Based on the insights provided by the Grofit app, the grower decided to increase the irrigation frequency and volume. They adjusted the schedule from four to five times a day and also increased the amount of water applied each time.

#### The Result

After implementing these changes, the tensiometer values began to show desired tension levels, falling between 1 to 10 centibar. This indicated that the soil moisture was within the optimal range, reducing stress on the strawberry plants and promoting better growth conditions.

#### Conclusion

This case study highlights the importance of precise irrigation management and the role of technology in achieving it, even in soilless conditions. The Grofit app's ability to provide real-time data and clear visualizations enabled quick and effective decision-making. By recognizing the irrigation problem early and adjusting accordingly, we were able to maintain optimal growing conditions and ensure healthy crop yields.
